Course Description In our days there is much talk on Islam as a religion, but − apart from a few specialists − almost nothing is known of the Classical Islamic civilisation and sciences. The course aims to fill this gap.\n In the Middle Ages, when Western Europe lived its dark age, the Islamic civilisation was on its peak. The history of Western civilisation is deeply rooted in Greek culture and the Islamic civilisation was highly instrumental in its re-discovery in the late Middle Ages and later in the Renaissance, forming a bridge between the Antiquity and the New Era in the Mediterraneum. To quote just two examples: Christian theology has been based by Aquinas (St. Thomas) on the works of the Islamic philosopher Averroës, and the translation of Avicenna`s (10th century) medical treatise was in academic usage even in the early 19th century.
