Course Description During the seminar students, guided by a leading Cold War historian, will read and analyze primary source materials in English translation pertaining to Cold War history from mostly Russian and East European archives. The most important topics to be discussed will be: the origins of the Cold War, the Sovietization of Eastern Europe, real and pseudo crises during the Cold War, a new interpretation of détente, the German question and European security, foreign policy coordination and lobby fights in the Soviet Bloc, the role of the East European states in the shaping of East–West relations, the end of the Cold War and the international context of the political transition in East-Central Europe.
